Teaching and living in the Barkly
The Barkly region is located in the Northern Territory and spans across 322,713 square kilometres. The region is known for its beautiful weather with an average of 181 clear blue-sky days annually with an average maximum temperature of 31.9 degrees and an average minimum temperature of 19.8 degrees. Explore the beautiful nature or take a trip to experience Australia’s last gold rush at the Battery Hill Mining Centre.
Tennant Creek is the biggest town in this region and is located in the middle of the Barkly Tablelands, 508km North of Alice Springs and 988km South of Darwin. Tennant Creek is full of history and is located between many of the Territory’s best-known sights such as Karlu-Karlu (Devils Marbles), the Davenport Ranges National Park and Tingkarli (Lake Mary Ann). All our remote Barkly Schools are located within 350km of Tennant Creek on sealed or dirt roads.

Alekarenge School
Positions available:
- Primary / Middle Years Teacher (Years 3-9)
Alekarenge (Ali Curung) School caters for approximately 130 students from birth (through the Family as First Teachers program) through to senior years. You will support students learning on country and work alongside local staff who are keen to share their knowledge and culture. The students are learning English and are almost all EAL/D. They speak Warlpiri and Alyawarr as their home language.
Ali Curung is located 160km south of Tennant Creek on the Stuart Highway or a three-hour drive north of Alice Springs. There are many picturesque spots to explore on the way including the Devils Marbles. It’s one of the larger communities in the Red Centre, with approximately 450 residents and is well serviced with a store, childcare centre, health clinic, police station, church, school, and a bakery.
Alpurrurulam School

Alpurrurulam School is a small, remote school that caters to approximately 97 students from Preschool to Middle Years.
Alpurrurulam is located 570km east of Tennant Creek and only a 3 hour drive from Mount Isa where you will have access to shops, restaurants, additional health care and the airport. There are also flights available from Alpurrurulam to Mount Isa and Alice Springs during the week. The region offers incredible 4WD and camping opportunities. Ampilatwatja School (pronounced um-bludder-witch) is a small, very remote school catering for approximately 165 students from birth (through the Family as First Teachers program) through to Year 10.
Ampilatwatja is located 315km south east of Tennant Creek (155 km unsealed) and 325km north east of Alice Springs, off the Sandover Highway (220 km unsealed). It's about a 4 hour drive in good conditions. With a community population of around 500 people who mostly speak Alyawarr as their home language, there is a community store that provides basic groceries or you can organise additional grocery orders from Alice Springs. The community is well known for its community arts centre - Artists of Ampilatwatja and in your spare time you can go camping, 4 wheel driving, waterhole swimming or watch the local community members play AFL or Basketball.Canteen Creek School

Tennant Creek Primary School caters for approximately 390 students from birth (through the Family as First Teachers program) through to Year 6 with 79% being Indigenous. The school has a Positive Learning Centre, Special Education Learning Centre and Mungkarta Homelands schooling contexts. Students have access to Clontarf Academy (Years 3 – 6 boys) and the Stars Foundation (Years 3 -6 girls) which offers a range of camps and activities.
Tennant Creek High School

Tennant Creek High School is a dynamic, community minded school servicing approximately 230 students with an 83% Indigenous student cohort from Years 7 to 12. Students from local urban, camp and remote communities study a variety of school based subjects, Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses as well as correspondence courses through the Northern Territory Open Education Centre.
Both Tennant Creek Primary School and Tennant Creek High School are located in the heart of Tennant Creek, an authentic Outback Town in the heart of the Northern Territory. Tennant Creek is a close knit town with a population of 3,000 people. The lifestyle is relaxed and the town is enriched by the comforts of country culture.
